A shocking revelation has left NIPSCO customers reeling, with many reporting a dramatic surge in their utility bills after meter replacements. This issue has sparked widespread concern and prompted an investigation by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.
Tela Sattrwhite, a resident of Gary, Indiana, shared her experience, detailing how her monthly gas and electricity bills skyrocketed from a manageable $200 to a staggering $500 after NIPSCO replaced her gas meter in October. She expressed her frustration, stating, "Ever since the servicemen serviced the meter, my bills have been through the roof."
Similar stories have emerged across Michiana, with Jody Lopez, a NIPSCO customer from Walkerton, revealing that her gas bill nearly doubled after a meter replacement. In a winter month, her bill unexpectedly soared from a typical $100 to a shocking $187, with delivery charges being a significant contributor to this increase.
NIPSCO's Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), introduced in March 2024, allows the company to remotely check meters without dispatching a crew. However, this new system has led to billing discrepancies, as acknowledged by NIPSCO in a document released by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. The commission initiated an investigation in November to address these concerns.
But here's where it gets controversial: NIPSCO has not yet responded to WNDU's request for comment regarding the ongoing investigation. This silence has left customers with more questions than answers, especially regarding the issue with how the new meters calculate gas supply charges.
And this is the part most people miss: delivery fees are also under scrutiny. Customers like Lopez and Sattrwhite have highlighted these fees as a significant concern, with Sattrwhite stating that the delivery charges are causing financial hardship, forcing her to make difficult choices between paying utility bills and putting food on the table.
