Curry Barker's directorial debut, The Obsession, is proving to be a hit at the box office, but it's not without its flaws. The writer-director has admitted to a significant plot hole that has left him scratching his head, and it's got audiences and critics alike buzzing with questions about a potential sequel or anthology series.
In the film, Bear (Michael Johnston) uses a magical item called the One Wish Willow to make a wish that his friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette) would love him more than anything. However, the rules of the One Wish Willow are a bit murky. Barker explains, "If the One Wish Willow actually works, and people are just making wishes left and right, there would be some crazy stuff going on. Like, dragons would exist. But the world in the movie is pretty normal. So, it doesn't make sense."
The issue lies in the fact that everyone can make one wish, and these wishes seem to come true simultaneously. Barker elaborates, "Every time someone makes a wish, they enter an alternate reality where their wish comes true. But that doesn't make sense because the money falls from the ceiling. It's broken."
Despite this plot hole, Barker is open to expanding the world of The Obsession. He suggests a sequel, Obsession 2, or an anthology series where each episode explores a different wish that goes off the rails. Barker envisions himself directing the pilot and inviting other filmmakers to contribute their unique takes on the concept. He says, "That would be really cool."
The director's willingness to address the plot hole and explore new ideas is a refreshing approach in the film industry. It shows a commitment to storytelling and a desire to create something that resonates with audiences. While the plot hole may be a minor setback, it doesn't diminish the overall appeal of The Obsession. Instead, it adds an intriguing layer of complexity that fans will no doubt want to explore further.
